Sunil Bharti Mittal was born on 23rd of October, 1957 in Punjab to an Aggarwal family. His father Sat Paul Mittal, was former Rajya Sabha MP with INC. his mother was Lalita. He has two brothers.

Sunil Bharti Mittal had gone to Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie and later admitted to Scindia School at Gwalior. He completed his graduation from Punjab University in 1976.

Mittal opened his first business unit manufacturing cycle parts in 1976 when he was only 18. He borrowed Rs. 20,000 from his father to start his business. Just in 3 year he started two more units making yarn and stainless steel sheets.

In 1980, he had sold his cycle parts and yarn making business and shifted to Mumbai to do something giant in his life. In Mumbai, he started his import and export business of stainless steel, brass, plastics and zip fasteners in 1981.sunil-as-complete-business-man

In 1982, he became dealer of portable generators of Suzuki in India and he was successful earning profit. When India government banned importing portable generators from oversea, Mittal started to rethink about new business. He saw the push-button phone at Taiwan trade fair for the first time in his life. Soon, he planned to introduce push-button telephones in India and signed up an agreement with Taiwanese suppliers.sunil-bharti-mittal

That time, telephones were not allowed to import according to Indian government regulation. Hence, Mittal started to import phone components from different ports and assembled the handsets in his Ludhiana unit. In 1985, he replaced old cranky phones and introduced first push-button telephones under the brand name, Beetel. The brand became popular household name within few years.

It was the first alarming sing of underpinning Bharti Telecome Limited.  Very soon, he had not limited his business making push button phones. He bought the revolution in telecommunication industry starting the manufacturing unit of Fax machines, Cordless phones as well as answering machines.

Soon the breakthrough came in his career when Indian government had issued fifty-two licenses to manufacture telephones for newly opened telecome industry. Mittal managed to secure one. Within few years, Mittal established Bharti Cellular Limited and started to sell cell phone service with brand name, Airtel.

He became the largest mobile service provider in India with 200 million users and extended his service to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Africa.

Sunil Bharti Mittal received IT Man of Year Award in 2002 by Dataquest and CEO of the year, 2002 by World HRD Congress.

He was awarded by Padma Bhushan in 2007. He got Philantropist of the year Award in 2011. In the year 2016, he received Honoris Causa Doctorate of Sciences (D.Sc.) Degree from Amity University Gurgaon.

Mittal got married to Nyna. He has three children, Elesha and twin sons- Kavin and Shravin. He shares very cordial relationship with his brothers. He was very close to his father who had passed away due to cardiac arrest in 1992.
