The Pride, Despite Adversity, of Oscar Wilde Quotes

Oscar Wilde quotes and sayings

While many may think that Oscar Wilde is an interesting choice to choose for the topic of pride, I would argue that there is a reason he is such a beloved literary figure, and why they clean the lipsticks marks off his tomb in Paris on a regular basis. I have been there, and I have see the phenomena for myself. He is revered and adored. Like many, he lived a difficult life. He was a proud and brilliant man. Oscar Wilde quotes and sayingsHe had his vices, but many of them were highlighted by the fact that he spent a good portion of his life persecuted for who he authentically was. Despite everything he endured, his wit, wisdom, and pride are never to be argued. He was a man of eloquent and thoughtful words, and one who added something to this world. Here are some of the treasures that he should be most proud of, and signs that he was always true to his authentic self:

– “When I had to fill in a census paper I gave my age as nineteen my profession as genius, my infirmity as talent.”

– “When people agree with me I always feel that I must be wrong.”

– “To know everything about oneself one must know all about others.”

– “To be natural is such a very difficult pose to keep up.”

– “George Moore wrote brilliant English until he discovered grammar.”

– “The Ideal man…he should always say much more than he means, and always mean much more than he says.”

– “Women are meant to be loved, not to be understood.”

– “The private lives of men and women should not be told to the public. The public have nothing to do with them at all.”

– “It takes a thoroughly good woman to do a thoroughly stupid thing.”

– “I think that generosity is the essence of friendship.”

– “The secret to remaining young is to never have an emotion that is unbecoming.”

– “To get back one’s youth, one has merely to repeat one’s follies.”

– “The old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything, and the young know everything.”

– “Youth is the one thing worth having.”

– “It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating.”

– There are many things we would throw away, if we were not afraid that others might pick them up.”

– “Credit is the capital of a younger person.”

– “The only difference between a saint and a sinner is that every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.”

– “The sick do not ask if the hand that soothes their pillow is pure, nor the dying care if the lips that touch their brow have known the kiss of sin.”

– “Sin is a thing that write’s itself across a man’s face. It cannot be concealed.”

– “One should never make ones debut with a scandal. One should reserve that to give an interest to one’s old age.”

– “When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy.”

While some of his words and wisdom might take a few moments of thought, they are witty, smart, and true. He was a man who despite adversity, despite criticism, was not afraid to speak his mind. He was revered to some degree, but he, as many others, would not know the true impact of his words, and the extent of being beloved, until he was gone. Hopefully, you can see that this was a proud man, a strong man, and one who was not afraid to speak what other only dare think.
