South African Cricketer Morne Morkel Biography
MorneMorket is an acclaimed cricketer of South Africa, who plays Test and limited overs. He is an all-round cricket, known for his left hand batting style and right arm fast bowling. He represents Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He is one of the tallest players in the world of cricket.
He was born on 6th October 1984 to an Afrikaner family in the Transvaal Province of South Africa. He was born to Albert Morkel and Mariana Morkel. He is the youngest of three children. He is the younger brother of Albie Morkel and lived with him before he got married. He is nicknamed as Lobster, Morras and Haydos. He hails from a family of cricket fans and was appreciated since his childhood days.
Career in Cricket
He made his debut as a bowler at the tender age of nineteen, at the Easterns against West Indians and as a batter at the age of 21. He bowled out RamnareshSarwan and that was one of the memorable victories at the beginning of his career. He further played in the SuperSport Series in 2003-04 season. He went on to play three first class matches in 2004-05. He ended the season with twenty first class wickets and boasted of an incredible improvement. He went ahead to a tour to Pakistan and performed mediocre in August, 2005. He secured international acclaim in 2006-07 season when he made his debut in Boxing Day Test against India. He was then chosen for the Twenty20 World Championship that was held in South Africa and emerged as one of the most prominent figures. Though South Africa was knocked out of the tournament, his enchanting bowling performance stood out.
He made his test debut against India in the year 2006. His last test was against England in January 2016. He made his ODI debut against Asia XI in June 2007 and his last ODI was against West Indies in June, 2016. He made his T201 debut in 2007 against West Indies and his last T201 in the year 2015 was against New Zealand.
Career in England
Besides his outstanding performances in domestic cricket, he played for Kent in England in 2008. He sustained injuries and was only able to play in one County Championship for Yorkshire.
Career in Indian Premier League (IPL)
In the first three seasons, MorneMorkel played for Rajasthan Royals and in a total of 16 matches, he took 25 wickets and collected the accolade of the purple cap, which signifies the best wicket taking bowler. He played for Dare Devils in the year 2013 and his performance was phenomenal but his team didn’t make it to the finals. Since, 2014 he has been playing for Kolkata Knight Riders where he is a fast bowler and a useful batter in the low order and the team banks upon him. Behind their consecutive successes in the IPL, MorneMorkel has been one of the many names that have made it possible.
He received two Man of the Match awards in the years 2009/10 and 2011/12 in the 4th and 3rd test series, respectively in the domain of test cricket. He won the Player of the Series Awards against India in 2010/11. In the domain of international cricket, he earned Man of the Match awards against Australia in 2011, Sri Lanka in 2012, New Zealand in 2012, Australia in 2012 and India in 2015. Besides, he also earned Man of the Match awards in Twenty20 International Cricket in 2007 and 2010.
He comes from a family of cricket lovers. He got married to his long-time girlfriend Roz Kelly on 6th December, 2014. She is a channel 9 reporter and met him during South Africa’s tour of Australia, in 2012.
