Childhood

Melissa is the daughter of a father who is of Irish descent and a mother who is of English, German and Irish ancestry. She was born on the 26th of August, 1970 in Plainfield, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago to Sandra and Michael McCarthy. Theirs was a strict Catholic family and she grew up with traditional values. She graduated from St. Francis Academy (now Joliet Catholic Academy) in Joliet, Illinois. McCarthy, who studied Textiles at Southern Illinois University, originally was interested in a career in fashion before she pursued a career in acting.

McCarthy had always been a talented child and she could always associate her childhood with the performing arts. She initially interested in stand-up comedy for which she moved to Los Angeles and then to New York. While in the city, McCarthy trained at The Actor’s Studio and performed in various stage productions. It was in New York, where she became a member of the legendary comedy troupe The Groundlings. After various TV appearances, she created her breakthrough as “Sookie St. James” on the acclaimed series Gilmore Girls.

In 2000, McCarthy landed her breakthrough role on the popular WB show Gilmore Girls, providing a nuanced, fun and captivating portrayal of the character. Gilmore Girls ran until 2007, at which time McCarthy acted alongside Ryan Reynolds in the psychological thriller The Nines. Beginning in 2010, McCarthy played the fourth-grade teacher Molly opposite actor Billy Gardell on the CBS hit sitcom Mike & Molly, a role for which she received her first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

McCarthy has a spotless reputation and was not involved in any scams or scandals throughout her career. She dated and then married her long time beau, Ben Falcone, an American actor, writer and producer. They have two daughters together; Vivian born in 2007 and Georgette born in 2010.
