He started his acting career as a regular on series until he rose to prominence as Richard Tyler in the science fiction series The 4400. He is remarkably known for his role in the House of Cards and has acted in myriad good movies like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Predators and the Hunger Game series. Mahershala Ali is the first Muslim actor to have an Oscar. His performance in Moonlight won him an Academy Award, SAG Award and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Mahershala Ali was born as Mahershalahazbaz Gilmore on February 16, 1974 in Oakland, California. He was born to Wilica and Philip Gilmore. He was raised in Ohio and returned to his birth place only when he was fourteen years of age. Mahershala Ali was raised Christian until he embraced Islam after joining Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. He graduated in 1996 from St. Mary’s College of California with mass communication. After graduation, he earned himself an apprenticeship at California Shakespeare Theater. He later enrolled himself in New York University’s graduating acting program, receiving his master’s degree in 2000.
The first film that came his way and can be considered as his breakthrough is the fantasy dream directed by David Fincher – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which was released in 2008. He played the role of Tizzy in this production. He is also known for his performance as Boggs in the Hunger Games series besides remarkable performances in movies like Predators, The Place Beyond Pines, Free State of Jones and Hidden Figures.
Ali stepped into his acting career through series. And he started off by acting in series like Crossing Jordan and Thread Matrix. His role as Richard Tyler in The 4400 is considered as a turning point in his acting career. He is acclaimed for playing the role of Remy Danton in the Netflix series The House of Cards besides playing Cornell Stokes in Luke Cage.
He recently starred in the drama film Moonlight (2016) where he played the role of a drug dealer and mentor named Juan. This role earned him critical appraisal and he bagged the SAG Award, an Academy Award and the Critic’s Choice Award Role for Best Supporting Actor. He had also received a Golden Globe and BAFTA nomination for this performance. His win at the 89th Academy Awards make him the first Muslim to have bagged an Oscar.
Ali recorded music as Prince Ali when he was signed to Bay Area recording label Hieroglyphics Imperium in the late 2000s. He released an album in 2007 known as Curb Side Service, but didn’t travel to popularize it to focus on acting.
He converted to Muslim after joining Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Mahershala Ali married Amatus-Sami Karim and in February 22, 2017 welcomed their daughter Bari Najma into the world. He has a cat named Nas, after the known musician. He has turned out to be the First Muslim to have won an Oscar at the 89th Academy Awards.
