He had to face a number of rejections in his career, but he remained undeterred and went on to be a successful investment banker and the Chairman of RIT Capital Partner plc which is one of the largest investment trust listed in the London Stock Exchange.
Education and Early Career
Born into the family of well known banker, Jacob Rothschild was the first child of Victor Rothschild and his wife Barbara Judith Rothschild. He went to college at Eton and later studied History in Christ Church, Oxford. Hugh Trevor Roper was his tutor here and he went on to gain the first rank in the subject.
After completing his studies in 1963, Jacob Rothschild joined the family bank named NM Rothschild & Sons that was situated in London. He continued to work here for about 17 years but resigned from the job when the Chairmanship was passed from his father to his cousin.
His first step into investment banking was when he gained the independent control of Rothschild Investment Trust independently which is now known as RIT Capital Partner plc. He worked hard to make this a successful organization and today it has net assets of ₤2 billion. Presently, he is the chairman of this establishment as well as that of its subsidiary – RIT Capital Management.
In the year 1989, he associated with Kerry Packer and Sir James Goldsmith and made a bid for British American Tobacco but failed to get his hands on it. However, this did not prove to be a deterrent in his path. In 1991, he joined hands with Sir Mark Weinberg and founded J. Rothschild Assurance Group which later came to be known as St. James’s Place plc.
Rothschild is a part of The Blackstone Group’s, International Advisory Board along with being a member of the Council for the Duchy of Cornwall that works for His Royal Highness Prince of Wales. He also hold the Honorary position of the President of Institue of Jewish Policy Research.
Jacob Rothschild has been a part of a number of philanthropic organizations. He played an important part in improving the Art scene in Britain, during his tenure as the Chairman of Trustees of National Gallery and later as the Chairman of National Heritage Memorial Fund. He also played an important role in restoring the Somerset House that is based in London. It is believed that he played a key role in helping the authorities to gain the Gilbert collection.
