Early Life and Education
Indra Nooyi was born Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi on 28th October 1955 into a conservative Tamil family. Like all south Indians, her parents were quite particular that she gains good education which is why she was enrolled into Holy Angels Higher Secondary School followed by Madras Christian College. She later went on to gain a seat in the prestigious IIM, Calcutta from where she got an MBA degree.
The Beginning of a Career
After completing her studies, Indra joined Johnson and Johnson as a Product Manager and later moved to Mettur Beardsell. In the year 1978, she quit her job when she got admission to Yale School of Management where she studied Public and Private Management. After completing the course in 1980, she joined Boston Consulting Group. However, her high aims could not be contained in this job and she soon moved to higher posts in companies like Motorola and Asea Brown Boveri.
When PepsiCo Knocked on her Door
In 1994, Indra Nooyi joined Pepsi Co. She held various posts in the company and rose to higher levels just with hard work and impressive will power. It was her never say die attitude which propelled her to the post of CFO of PepsiCo in the year 2001. She was also added to the Board of Directors of the company.
As the CFO, she propelled the company to newer heights and their profits were estimated to have grown to $6.5 million from $2.7 million within a year. This surely proved to be a feather in Nooyi’s cap.
Her efforts did not go unnoticed and she was promoted to the post CEO of PepsiCo in 2011. It is believed that her total compensation at the time was $17 million which rose to $19 million by 2014. Presently, apart from being the CEO of the company, she is also its Chairman.
Awards and Achievements
Indra Nooyi has been an inspiration to the women across the world and has proved that if a woman sets her heart to something, she can surely achieve it. Her contribution in her field of work has won her a number of awards and recognitions over the years. She made it to the list of Forbes’ list of 100 Most Powerful Women in the World for seven consecutive years. She also secured Number 1 rank in Fortune Magazine’s List of Most Powerful Women in Business for four consecutive years.
In 2007, she was adorned with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award by the President of India.
She also made it to the Best CEOs list of Institutional Investors magazine from 2008 to 2011.
In the year 2013, she made it to the list of NTV’s 25 Greatest Global Living Legends. She was given this award by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.
