Named after the former US President, Ronald Reagan, who also happened to be the favourite actor of Jose Dinis Aveiro, Christiano’s gardener father, Ronaldo was born in Santo Antonio, Funchal, Madeira, on the western coast of Portugal on February 5, 1985. As his parents were of modest means, Ronaldo, the youngest of four siblings faced hardships. His mother Maria Dolores dos Santos used to do odd cooking and cleaning jobs.
Young Ronaldo got introduced to soccer very early thanks to his father’s kit man job with a local team Andorinha. His dribbling skills attracted the attention of Sporting CP club that asked him to join their academy at a fee of 1,500 pounds.
