Being a man of learning and scholarship, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam always underlined the importance of books and pointed out the need to gather knowledge through critical reading and owning as many good books as possible so that useful knowledge could be learnt.

Following in the spirit of Francis Bacon and the intellectuals from the Enlightenment era, who stressed on the utility of books and learning from them, Kalam also stated that a good book could help in not only increasing knowledge but also in the upliftment of the individual and the nation as a whole. Some quotes in this regard are:

“One best book is equal to a hundred good friends but a one good friend is equal to a library”.

“Don’t read success stories, you will only get a message. Read failure stories, you will get some ideas how to get success”.
