In the Beginning
Zara Clothing was founded in the year 1975 by Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera. Initially, the store was named by Amancio as Zorba after a classic movie.
However, when he realized that there was a famous bar going by the same name, he changes the name of his store to Zara. This store comprised of economical look-alikes of the world famous clothes that were offered by popular brands.
The huge acceptance that his store got propelled him to open up more stores throughout Spain. He even changed his design and manufacturing process to accommodate the high demands and set up a factory in La Coruna in the year 1980.
When Expansions Began
The company owners, encouraged by all the success soon started thinking of expanding their market and opened their first international shop in Porto in Portugal in 1988. They soon expanded to other important countries like USA, France, Mexico, Belgium, Sweden, Greece, Japan, Morocco, Singapore, Australia, Hungary, China, Costa Rica etc.
When the internet rage started gripping the world, they went on to launch the online portal for Zara Clothing in 2010 September. The website was initially launched in Germany, Spain, Italy, France, UK and Portugal.
